It can be frustrating when your Kobo eReader screen freezes mid-page or becomes completely unresponsive. Before you panic, know that the vast majority of these issues can be fixed in a few minutes with a few simple steps. This guide will walk you through the process, from a quick restart to a full reset.

Step 1: Force a Soft Restart (The 15-Second Fix)

For most freezes, the fastest solution is to force your eReader to shut down and restart.

  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds and then release it. Your Kobo should turn off.
  • Press the power button again normally to turn it back on.

If this doesn't work: Your device might be completely out of battery.

Step 2: Charge Your Device

A frozen or black screen is very often a sign of a fully drained battery. E-ink screens can hold an image for weeks, even when the battery is dead, which is why it can look frozen.

  • Plug your Kobo into a charger for at least one hour.
  • After an hour, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to try and restart it.
  • Tip: If the device still doesn't respond, try using a different USB cable and port on your computer, as the cable itself can sometimes be the issue.

Step 3: Perform a "Manual" Reset (For Specific Models)

If a charge and soft restart didn't work, certain Kobo models have a special button combination for a "manual" factory reset. This will erase all your data, so it's a last resort.

Here are the most common methods:

  • For Kobo Sage, Libra 2, Forma, Libra H2O: While the device is off, press and hold one of the page turn buttons. While holding the page turn button, press and hold the power button. Wait for about 30 seconds for the screen to flash and the process to begin.
  • For Kobo Libra Colour: Power off the device by holding the power button until "Powered off" appears. Then, press and hold a page turn button, and while holding it, press and hold the power button. When the power light stops blinking, release both buttons.
  • For Kobo Aura Edition 2: With the device off, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. When the Restore screen appears, release the power button.
  • For Kobo Touch: With the device off, press and hold the Home button. While holding it, slide the power button to the right several times. Continue holding the Home button until the power light blinks rapidly, then release it.

You can find a complete list of manual reset instructions for all models on the official Kobo help site.

⚠️ An Important Note Before You Reset

A "factory reset" or "manual reset" completely wipes your Kobo. This means you will lose:

  • Your bookmarks and annotations
  • Sideloaded books (any not purchased from the Kobo Store)
  • Your settings and account information

Do a back up and be sure to use this one as a last resort!

Books purchased from Kobo can be re-downloaded for free after you set your device up again.

Step 4: Try a Factory Reset

If you can access your Kobo's menus, try a standard factory reset before the manual method. It is less intensive but will also erase your personal data.

  1. Go to your Home Screen.
  2. Tap More (the three dots at the bottom).
  3. Tap Settings > Device Information.
  4. Tap Factory Reset under the Advanced section.

After any reset, you'll need to set up your Kobo again using Wi-Fi or the Kobo Desktop App. By following these steps in order, you should be able to resolve the most common freezing issues and return to your book.
